Arts and Sciences and Social Justice
Welcome to the summer 2021 online edition of Access, the flagship publication of the Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences. For nearly a decade, Access has showcased the excellence in teaching, research, and service that makes the school one of America’s premier liberal arts institutions. This issue’s focus on social justice highlights ways SAS contributes to the greater good during challenging times. New offerings like the Black Lives Matter Signature Course and the environmental studies major provide students the opportunity to study difficult truths about the world while empowering them to make positive change. Faculty members like Javier Robles (above) and Fran Trees, meanwhile, pursue innovative teaching while seeking to help vulnerable and marginalized populations. All told, these stories show the Rutgers liberal arts tradition is active and engaged, committed to access and excellence, and helping to improve the world.
